We are having a 15 year celebration of providing first aid courses by offering past and future clients a great service and value for money when you book a training course with us. Our first offer of 2012 is for all past and future clients on our High Peak Wilderness First Aid Course.  Once you have completed the first aid course it will last for three years before you need to renew the qualification. Currently, there is no mandatory refresher.  However, we offer you the opportunity to attend the second day of the High Peak Wilderness First Aid Course at any time in the three year period for free! This will enable you to refresh your skills and feel more confident to deal with an incident in a remote location. It would also be useful for you to attend if you are going for an assessment with the British Canoe Union – BCU, Mountain Leader Training Association – MLTA, Mountain-Bike Instructors’ Award Scheme – MIAS and British Caving Association – BCA. These are just a few examples of the national organisations that recognise our first aid training courses. We can also give you up to date advice on what to have in a first aid kit and equipment to carry to deal with an emergency when help may be delayed. We also have a range of tough, waterproof manuals, casualty card and and rescue request forms to make your life easier!

The courses are recognised by National Governing Bodies so if you are a caver, paddler, mountainbiker or mountaineer we can provide you with a suitable course. We will also have first aid courses to enable you to work with expeditions that have a core competencies associated with leadership and management.

The last 15 years has been a very interesting journey for High Peak First Aid and for myself as the Company Director.  A client recently asked me if I ever get bored running courses.  Simply…no! Every course is different due to the varied individuals who attend – everyone on a course has qualities to contribute and we aim to draw those together, add our input and send you off to be qualified to deal with an emergency if it should arise.

The chances of you being involved in a serious emergency are relatively low.  However, compared to the staggering amount of hours our training  team has supplied to you over 15 years  we have a lot of thank you letters and emails  from people that have had to deal with major emergencies where their training has really helped.

High Peak Wilderness First Aid - Nepal

We are providing a series of Wilderness First Aid Courses in Nepal this Winter! Courses will be in Kathmandu, Pokhara and at Paddle Nepals River Camp at Chhimkesory. The opportunity to attend a Wilderness First Aid Course in a true wilderness setting is quite rare. Paddle Nepal provide the logistics to get to the camp and look after you in camp – we provide the Wilderness First Aid. Gurkha Adventures are kindly organising the courses in Kathmandu. There is a sliding scale of fees to enable junior guides to gain an internationally recognised first aid qualification from a UK company. If you have an interest in attending and wonder how to go about it, please get in touch!

We are exhibiting at the Emergency Services Show 23-24 November – Coventry.  We are busy at work today sending out E-tickets to clients.  Our Banner is ready for printing along with flyers along with an interesting handout! We will be sending out regular updates during the show.

HSE First Aid at Work Training

This afternoon we trained at Cresswell Quarry in Bradwell owned by Furness Bros.  They have been attending an HSE First Aid at Work Course.  We took them to their quarry to test their new skills.  Not much point in repeated practise on a carpet when you work outside in all weathers.  If you are thinking about booking on our HSE First Aid at Work courses, we offfer open courses at our venue or can train at your venue or have you come to our venue at Hope in the Peak District.

We seem to have collected quite an unusual portfolio of training for HSE First Aid at Work – Farms, Quarries, Mines and even underground in a local Peak District Mine! You can see a selection of photos in our gallery.

Wilderness First Aid for Hang Gliders

New Wilderness First Aid Courses with High Peak First Aid for for Hang Gliders, Paragliders and Airsports enthusiasts! I recently had a flight in Nepal with  Babu Suruwar the Nepali National Champion. Babu was my student on a Wilderness First Aid Course organised by Paddle Nepal and he was working for Blue Sky Paragliding owned by David Arrufat.  When he said I should be his student I jumped at  the chance! I have some excellent photos and  a video flying from Sarangkot at Pokhara.  Sadly we had to abort our original flight near Machhapuchare Base Camp due to an awesome thunderstorm – we fled down the valley to Green Wall with the storm chasing us but still managed to fly at a lower altitude and had a great time.

I nearly turned down the offer as I suffered from life threatening Pulmonary and Cerebral Oedema when working at a Rescue Post in Nepal a couple of years ago. A crackly phone call from Pokhara, Nepal to Judy Leden from Airways Airsports, Derbyshire saved the day! Judy Leden and her team have now been on a couple of courses with us so I took her advice and had a great flight!

Last week we had Mark Bosher from Peak Air Sports on a course  – this lead to the development of 2 and 4 hour courses for fliers who do not need a Wilderness First Aid qualification as they are recreational flyers….but may need one! We now train all our Wilderness First Aid clients on how to treat a downed Hang Glider or Paraglider. We have a variety of kit so if you have been looking at our photos on our Facebook page you may gain a slight advantage.  However, we have a variety of harnesses to test your skills. You maybe a Mountain Leader but it could be another outdoor user that you have to administer first aid to!

All of this activity has rubbed off on Jane – one of our admin staff who always wanted to jump of Bradwell Edge in the Peak District! So look out for some great photos in our gallery soon!

High Peak First Aid New Venue in Derbyshire

One of our classrooms! I will be posting more photos over the next few weeks. We have been very busy since I came back from providing wilderness first aid in Nepal.  We moved to our  new venue without disrupting our every Wednesday and Thursday and every weekend for Wilderness First Aid, not to mention courses away from base for HSE (Health and Safety Executive First Aid) and an Oxygen Competency Course for Mastermelts of Buxton, Derbyshire:they needed a course from High Peak First Aid as they use Cyanide and have to meet the standards provided by HSE (Health and Safety Executive).

Jane and Tony in reception are taking on more of our admin as each day passes.  We are getting to grips with our Microsoft Dynamics CRM system and we are asking ‘The CRM Business’ at the Electric Works in Sheffield to add new modules to integrate our SAGE accounts system and website bookings.  This means that we can provide a super slick service for our clients.

We are not perfect and in this swap over period we had a couple of casualties so we gave them a free course. As the Training Director and owner of High Peak First Aid if we do make a mistake we take responsibility and will give free first aid courses…thankfully we have had under five casualties in fourteen years of providing first aid courses.  Not bad at as we have trained over 50, 000 people!!

We also bought in Hudson Hill so if our IT system does weird stuff we call them and they remote access our network and sort out any glitches. Hudson Hill were awesome over the Christmas Period when I provided first aid courses in  Nepal.  Microsoft 2010 was badly behaved but Hudson Hill sent out an emergency response so I had access to one of their IT guys who sorted the whole issue out while I sat in the Olive Cafe, Lakeside, Pokhara.

Babu! paragliding champ from Nepal!

We are pinned in a pincer attack! Requests for our Emergency Preparedness Course, our mentoring scheme for Trainers and two requests for mentoring on two different continents. I’m glad we have Microsoft Dynamics CRM system to support us provided by the CRM Business in Sheffield at the Electric Works and remote IT support from Hudson Hill for when IT does weird stuff and we need to concentrate on training.  I will be providing a write up for both companies shortly.

We became a little too busy this winter when I worked for Paddle Nepal and the British Gurkhas Nepal – back in the UK courses ran every Wednesday and Thursday and every weekend for Wilderness First Aid and for our group bookings. I am guilty of poking several projects and we had a couple of casualties…two clients – individuals I screwed up on when we swapped our system over: I hate letting people down so we offered them free places. It prompted me to look back over 14 years of our training records and I am glad to say that mistakes have been very few!

We have some pretty neat stuff on the way from Barques our web designers for Emergency Prepardeness, Individuals on courses and our key clients.  It’s client driven, you tell us what you like and what you want! You will soon see a testimonial page on High Peak First Aid’s website – all the good stuff of course and where we could have done better.  We aim to be transparent and open to inspection so I’ll post that stuff  on our site and what we have done to make things better for you..even down to comments like..more cake!

Last, but not least we have two new people to deal with your phone calls and admin queries.  A lot going on but I will keep you updated!

Wilderness First Aid and Leadership

A great weekend! We saw our first group into our new venue.  The only venue in the UK completely dedicated to first aid training.  A place for you to come on a course, look through our library, watch DVDs and have access to private land with varied terrain for our wilderness first aid courses.  We are not all about Wilderness First Aid we can provide you with HSE First Aid at Work and now we have Defibrillator Training.  We have some really exciting developments on the way and I will keep you posted.
